Metro's Data Dump

Greater Greater Washington and a lot of other people are really jazzed about Metro releasing its transit data to potential software developers. We're certainly not technically minded here but realize there are probably some nifty applications and tools that could be built using Metro's data.

While that's all swell, we're not sure how it IMPROVES the actual functioning of Metro, which is our goal. Cool Google or iPhone apps won't keep decrepit trains from derailing.

  1. Hopefully with more cool Google and iPhone apps it will increase the ridership at off peak hours with excess capacity, thus bring in more revenue without adding extra service.

  2. Could be, but news like today's about poor track quality and inspections that don't catch problems will drive away droves more than any iPhone app would attract. Not saying it's a bad thing Metro released this data, but I'd rather see more attention focused on the fundamentals, which Metro apparently can't get right.

  3. I'm not sure of the value of this. You just have to read the news to gather the most important data about Metro there is: it sucks!
