ReplyDeleteIt is the Washington Express, not the Examiner. I've seen enough of the graphics and layouts of both to know the difference. That's a minor point though. Apparently, the Express is softer on the back as I recently saw a "bum bed" in the Shady Grove parking garage stairwell that was padded with about 50 Express papers.
ReplyDeletePretty good idea. Kind of a compromise though....get Metro grime on your hand or newsprint on your hand? Purell doesn't work that well on newsprint though.
ReplyDeleteThe only good thing in the Express is the comic strip Pearls Before Swine. The Examiner has much better local news coverage.

ReplyDeleteI use either the Express or the Examiner on the seat or the floor (to set my backpack on) when I see wet stains of questionable origin.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Examiner used to have two sudoku puzzles per day -- which used to make it my preferred paper (who reads the crap in the Examiner, apart from the Metro articles, anyway?) -- but they recently replaced one sudoku with a 'ken ken' puzzle. Not nearly as good a replacement. So now it's a tossup for my morning sudoku fix.

Examiner has better sports, hands down. And if you don't want to read biased, pro-business, anti-working class claptrap, don't read either. Both seem to be 85% wire-serviced. Kakuro + sudoku + kenken + crossword, without having to fundamentaly change folding, makes the Examiner my preferred paper. Oh, and the editorials are hilarious. Fear is the new funny.

Most of the stories are wire service (AP I think is the main vendor of news for the Express). It's not like the staff of the WAPO is writing exclusively for the Express. And the fallacy that the Post is extremely liberal is just that, a fallacy. They were one of the only newspapers in the country to apologize to its readership for buying the last administration's reasoning for starting the Iraq War without doing its job as the fourth estate (hardly liberalism at its finest). And it's a little hard to be liberal with the likes of Krautheimer and Novak (RIP) as editorial mainstays. I dare you to show me the Post's liberalism. I've heard it my whole life. There's nothing liberal about the Post or any other MSM-- especially considering who owns every single major news outlet in this country of ours (hint, corporate). It is the press' function to question our government and hold them accountable for what they say. That is not liberal. Unfortunately, that is not what they do anymore, either.

Well, I don't have the time to prove to you that the Washington Post and MSM is liberal. It should be quite clear to any educated person. If you need evidence, search the WaPo archives to see who they have endorsed for President over the past fifty years. Was their a single Republican? I know what you're going to say, they have endorsed Frank Wolf for Congress and so and so Republican for the Virginia assembly. That's S.O.P. Endorse a Republican if he is sure to win a lesser office and thus keep up the illusion that you are not liberal. Like me saying I endorse Romney for President and Liberal Democrat Donna Edwards for Maryland's 4th Congressional District. Cool, now I'm nonpartisan! Also, Metro sucks!
ReplyDeleteUmmm... back to the original Unsuck post (well, sort of in a roundabout way). I wish there was some leeway about eating & drinking on Metro. I’m not talking about a full-fledge meal or anything. This morning, I had an annoying tickle in my throat due to the enormous amount of pollen that’s floating around. I know I scared and/or annoyed anyone who was sitting around me. I couldn’t reassure them it was only a tickle in my throat nor could I put a piece of candy or a cough drop (had I had either with me) or drink a little bit of water. I’m sure everyone thinks I have the plague and am highly contagious! Sorry everyone! It’s allergy season and I hate it!!
ReplyDeleteThe old Unsuck poll as to which was the preferred newspaper had a serious flaw, in that it omitted an option for "neither - both of them have lousy content, are distributed by aggressive workers who block station entrances, and contribute to litter on the trains."
