I was there! On that train. I wondered why we were driving through flames but not much I could do about it. Flames on both sides - first "stage right" on the right outside edge, which is what that video appears to show and then just as we passed by, more flames on the left in the middle of the track area.
Only human was one fellow off to "stage-right" of the train outside of the fence with a hoe. He was slowly and barely pushing flaming bits back through a hole in the fence. NO other human around!
The entire car went "whoa!" and watched as we flamed by the flames. Interesting this is the first place I've seen any comments about it. (Everyone thinks I'm nuts for claiming my metro train really was "flaming down the road!" ;)
As a rider of the flames, I take liberty of using Unsucks valuable space to reiterate on behalf of Metro: "Is the culture of safety present at Metro? Yes. But not to the degree that it needs to be."
True! Need more degrees of heat for a properly cooked human burger I do believe.
Last week I think Thursday. Around 5:40 pm Vienna to New Carrollton line. I got on the train at 4:50 pm at Ballston to New Carrollton. The flaming moment was around the Deanwood station if I recollect correctly. Saw no humans on the left like in that video though so perhaps that video was the next train coming by? (I did not report is as I did not know if anyone would actually believe me at Metro.. not meant as sarcastic, just factual. How often does one say...? :)
It was in fact on Thursday on the Orange Line between Deanwood and Cheverly. If I remember correctly, the fire started around 3:00 pm. Prince George's County 911 Communications notified Metro Rail (Central) of the fire but they continued to run trains through the scene. This is a huge safety issue and Metro dropped the ball, as usual.
I rode over this sometime after it happened and saw firefighters on the Amtrak tracks and smoldering wood/mulch. A friend of mine was one of the firefighters there, but he wasn't sure how it started.
the trouble with Metro? assuming you could distill its ills to one metaphysical fault... the fundamental fault lies in the flawed basic design philosophy, compounded by what can only be termed avocational management oversight through the years. To build a two-track system in the 1960s, ignoring the examples of subway systems in all the great cities of the world, can only be termed, with great kindness, short-sighted. The "schedule" trackwork during operating hours, when the system actually shuts down for several hours every day, can only be seen as uncaring and irresponsible. Disney did a better job of designing for DsneyWorld, at least it serves its passenger base adequately.
on saturday,11.27.10, after 5 pm i tried to get off the metro rail.my backpack on wheels stopped,so i got off the t rain and tried to lift it. but the door closed on me.there were hardly any riders.i could neither get back in the train, nor get out. i tried to get out with all my strenght.there were hardly any passengers on the train, and i saw nobody to get off at twinbrook.finaly, a passenger came to my rescue.he tried to open the door, but used all his strenght to keep the door open. then there was a noise, the door opened slightly, but closed it again right away.in the meanwhile i tried to get out, and finaly succeded.i was in such shock,i had to run after the rescuer to thank him.then i went to the station manager, mr. r. walraven, he asked if i want to file a complaint, or if he should make it? i just wanted to get away, it was getting dark.i felt it was just a waste of time. i spoke with mr. walraven recently and he told me that he reported the incident to the call center. i thought my life was over. and i would be dragged to the next station(white flint)to my death. the driver should have investigated, he should know there was a problem.
Over 700,000 of you take Metro every day. Whether it's a simple tweet from the front lines, a funny photo or story or something more substantial, tell us. Got an idea of something we should do? Let us know. More than half of this blog has been written by riders just like you.
