'Absolutely Absurd'

Here is perhaps an explanation as to why the new Dupont South escalators are among Metro's worst performing.

From Emily:
The Dupont South escalators presented me with a tough choice one night last week around 8 p.m.:  Do I hobble down on crutches with all the risks entailed, or do I hobble through the circle on crutches to reach the elevator that may or may not be in service?
I hobbled down the still escalator stairs.

When I reached the bottom, I had a word with the really nice, and almost equally frustrated, station employee.

It turns out that when Metro contracted with a company to replace the escalators, the contract included a clause that said only employees of the contracted company can touch the escalator.

Since the Dupont South escalators had been replaced by this company, Metro personnel (including the engineer standing there during the conversation) are unauthorized to adjust them.

The station manager had to put in a request to the contracting company for them to send an employee to Dupont South just to switch one escalator's direction from up to down.

The station manager had been waiting for 4 hours for someone to come and make that switch.

Absurd.  Absolutely absurd.
Metro finally "responded" obliquely to this post, which meticulously documents the problems with the "transit grade" Dupont South escalators. They wouldn't respond directly to the statistics based on their own data that bear the problems out, but a spokesman emailed WAMU:
"The escalators at the South Entrance are performing as designed,” the statement said. “We are happy with their performance, and so are the 20,000 people who use the station each day and understand how much better their experience is now."
Last week, when DCist approached Metro asking about the original post, Dan Stessel told them:
"I have a standing rule of not commenting on Unsuck."

These are the same bureaucrats who will be running our health care system.
Unreal. Only Metro could hatch such a scheme.
Absurd is the perfect word.
However, knowing Metro, their solution will be to pay to have an elevator company employee permanently located at Dupont station, with nothing to do but turn the escalators on and off.

And they would pay him overtime!
F Dan Stessel. We get better information out of unsuck than we do out of Dan.
What kind of bureaucratic nightmare is this? Jesus. They can't even turn the escalators around? New depths of stupidity.

Oh, and I wonder what happens when Metro is allowed to touch them?

Nevermind. I already know.
FIRE STESSEL. How can a PR flack not comment to the umm, media. Look at the Congressional press pass policy, blogs are considered legitimate media sources.
This is absurd. But on the other hand, what's the issue with the recently refurbished Farragaut North platform escalators? There is no outside company or weird contract to blame. They just switched them off for what reason?

Dan Stessel shouldn't have to comment on you haters and antis. You welcomed him into your blog with a planned ambush then viciously atttacked his character and made up things to make him look bad. Of course he won't comment, this blog is run by and for people who hate SMARTH Growth and public transporation and just love cars.

And maybe you other guys complaining should understand this is simply a metro and SMARTH GROWTH plan to get you more excercise every day. You're welcome for all we do for you!

The contract says the company will have someone dispatched within 24 hours. This was 4.

You're welcome!
Two out of 3 of the Smithsonian metro escalators (Mall exit) were NOT working on SUN afternoon. That was during the LOC book fest, no less!

You could get off a the Archives station to get to the mall. What are you, afraid of the Green line or something?!
Ah ah ah... stupid comment of somebody never riding the metro on the weekend... Doing a transfer during the weekend? Really? REALLY?!?! With the risk of having to wait for a train 24 minutes?
Moreover, are you able to know the status of all the escalators when you stepped out of your metro? I don't think so...
Start on the Green line and you don't have to transfer. Yo must be a teabagger who's afraid of the Green line!
Oh joy, they are starting this 'improvement' to the Van Ness escalators in the next few days.
