Sarles to Meet Riders?

UPDATE:  Apparently, due to a broken escalator at Rosslyn, the time for Sarles' visit is now 4.

Looks like the Wizard of Sarles reads this blog.

Metro employees tell me the aloof GM is actually, incredibly going to come out from his cave and get out there and rub elbows with the riders who pay his $350,000 salary.

Sources say the Metro honcho will be at Rosslyn later today.

He'll even hold court behind a special table, they say.

Odd thing is, Metro has reallocated manpower to scrub and polish the station for what one employee called "his highness' appearance."

Wish they'd do that for us riders.

"The custodians are scrubbing and mopping the floors,"said one source. "The back steps up to Ft. Myers Dr. were scrubbed spotless. They dropped off a couple scissor jacks today so they can change all the light bulbs in the station as well. I am sure they will have additional fare card techs, ATC techs, etc., around just in case. They are doing way more than needs to be done, and way less than deserves to be on a daily basis."

The GM lives in a bubble it would appear.

The source was not sure what time Sarles would make his first public appearance in some time, but added "someone needs to bust his balls about sh*t that actually matters."

As of print time, the best guess for Sarles' greeting of the unwashed was from noon-2 p.m.

Stand by for updates as they become available.

Like most Metro public meetings, Sarles' appearance comes at an inconvenient time for most riders.

What would you say to boss Sarles if you had the chance?

You're just mean and negative. pish-posh harrrumphf-rumphff. HOW DARE you Criticize our Comrade from the Nomenklatura ? ! !
I would tell him to retire and let someone younger and more capable take over.
He might get stumped on that one since Rosslyn has a more unique design....

Isn't this what the Soviets would do when American diplomats would tour Mother Russia?

It's what Saddam would do when the NATO weapons inspectors came.

What a con job. Cleaning for the royal PITA him while he hides behind a table to greet riders?
Wouldn't it be nice if Sarles would visit stations unannounced or incognito so that he gets the true picture of Metro life? Maybe Rosslyn or Metro Center during a rush hour without all the pre-cleanup and extra WMATA flacks around? This PR visit today reminds me of the idiotic photo op to present Foggy Bottom's new escalators.

I've been riding Metro (no car, health issues prevent biking, haven't found a nearby rideshare) since the mid-1980's and I am serious when I say that Metro is, and has been for several years, in steep decline. I'm really not a Metro hater; it's just that I can't appreciate it now knowing how clean, safe and reliable it once was and could still be if they'd have had decent management and maintenance all along.

Chances are he already knows what he'd find. Thus, he makes sure they know he'll visit and have time to clean.

Really, what we need to do is have him visit all the stations at least once a week so that the spiffing up continues.
He should be on Undercover Boss. I'd like to see his reaction to some of his workers' behavior.

All questions will be filtered through DrGridlock... 1st question: Why do some stations have 2 entrances and others only 1?
I actually saw Sarles yesterday (or someone who bears a striking resemblance to him) near the apartments just outside of the Crystal City Mall. I guess Metro thought it would be a great idea to put his funded apartment in an area with the highest rent. At any rate, he had one of those folding chairs on wheels with him, and he looked genuinely fatigued, gaunt, and beaten. I hate Metro probably about as much as anyone, but I felt sorry for him.
Sarles should show up unannounced to anyone, bring a folding table, sit down and engage. No show, no pre-planning. Let him see a real station.....

I want him to make a public vow that he will ONLY use Metro for all his transportation needs from now on.
That should get things moving quickly in the right direction.

That would only make things worse, as his regular stations would be jammed with crews of custodians ready to keep things spotless for His Magnificence; obviously other stations would be ignored.
Or would they have a special train that would send advace custodial shock troops to whatever station he intends to use next, so that it would be all tidy for his imperial presence?
There will be more Transit Officers there too. Guaranteed.

The Tro is all about 'smoke and mirrors'. The more you dig, the more you find this to be true.

Ask whatever questions you want, but you know he'll NEVER answer them or answer them directly!
If only he'd make a trip to Franconia-Springfield station. Place is ankle-deep in bird poop and feathers and I'm only slightly exaggerating.

Sounds disgusting, and unhealthy. Can you get pictures? That is something that maybe Unsuck would post and publicize. Even Metro must be shameable at some level.
Will Sarles arrive in the Sarlesmobile?
He'll be on the platform so those who want to meet him without traveling will have to go through the fare gates. Paying for the privileged to see the holy one.
Will Unsuck be there asking questions?
Ask him why we got charged yesterday after leaving the same station to catch a bus. Not charging us for NOT getting on a train (and leaving the same station I just entered) should be a PRIORITY thing to figure out. They're charging for a service they didn't provide.
If he were smart he would show up today at some other station.

I'd like to ask him why he needs such a large PR staff. Why not cut back there, implement some positive changes in the system (hire cleaning crews, elevator/escalator technicians, etc) and let the results speak for themselves?

I'd also ask him why Dan Stessel never publicly apologized for his "One person's harrassment is another person's flirting" comment. He apologized in private to the group, but never made his apology public.
Re: the linked article, goat carts might be a good first step toward getting multiple lanes of traffic moving through the tunnels.

Dear Mr Sarles, Please come to Cleveland Park. Apparently your arrival will precipitate having the station washed down and new lightbulbs too. We would very much like these. Sincerely, Weekday Comuter
Three out of the four escalators I use each day at Metro Center were out this morning. Just saying.
He should hire Miss Metro to be one of his PR people:

I just happened to be in Rosslyn while Sarles was there. The thing I noticed that I found very off-putting was that he was surrounded by great big security guys (not metro police, these guys were in suits). There was someone talking with Sarles, and I didn't have time to stop anyway (on my way to the airport). But, who would want to have to walk the gulag to get to him anyway?? Why bother if they're going to make it so intimidating to even get near him?

And the transit police they brought in to add to the security theater? They were standing outside the gates heckling one of the newspaper guys. Very classy.

All told, I was even more convinced I have got to find parking near work and get away from metro for good!
