Thank you for riding Ghettorail.
Well, at least no one pulled out a knife! I'd say that's an improvement.
Good times. Thanks Metro.

Bang up job Taborny!
Hey, they're fighting each other instead of innocent bystanders! Improvement!
Here's another metro altercation from that same guy. Keep up the good work Mr. DMVALLACCESS!

Scary! Why didn't anyone call the police from the call button? I would have had a heart attack from fear if I was on that train!! Yikes.

The call button? I've been on three trains in the past two weeks where the driver has had to make an announcement to passengers that whoever is pushing the emergency button needs to come to the front of the train because the intercoms don't even work. Luckily for most of us, they didn't bother to come forward so the train kept moving.
Pushing the call button is a surefire way to make sure you are the next target!
Pushing the call button for help? Apparently you believe in slavery!

Can everyone on the internet please agree to stop using the "this." meme. please?
Why? It's the same as saying, "I agree," but with one less letter and one less space. Those are two keystrokes that are not needed with the use of "this."

corresponding flaws

p.s. in all serious the violence needs to EEEENNNDDDD, people. when are we going to learn that before we can learn... we'll have to grow.
What is this, Atlanta? BOOM!
It appears to be some kind of sport.

We're heading in the wrong direction.
It's Thunderdome between the fare gates.
Can we please get police on trains and out of our stations checking what I'm having for lunch!?

Given the choice between one and the other I absolutely agree that the police should be on the trains and platforms and not checking bags.

However, I'm not sure that it is a choice between one and the other.

Also, I haven't used Metrorail much lately (been on the bus) - are they actually doing bag checks anywhere? On a regular basis? I've heard that people don't like the idea but I haven't heard that the checks are actually taking place.
Stop eating lunch in the station, and maybe they'll have time.
metro onboard surveillance like on the bus

@Aldog: What will that do? I can't see how surveillance will stop a violent act in progress. We already have plenty of after-the-fact video, and it does not seem to make and difference.
So, instead of the other kids trying to break it up, they all cheer and stand there taking videos, including this one. Also, the bag checks are done by DHS, not Metro, so one issue isn't related to the other

These kids can't fight worth a damn.
1 reply · active less than 1 minute ago
yes. i grew up in rockville. we would have fights from time to time walking home from school. i guess this is kind of similar? but these kids just suck at fighting. and i'd say kids would jump in way quicker to break things up. the schools would also get wind of fights and put admin and security out on the path home to break it up. total fail on so many fronts. i like that the argument to keep metro being open later is that we're a world class city. stop subsidizing the drunks, give folks who have to work late a bump to get home, and stop kids from being jerks on the trains.

Savages. This is why I never ride the Green Line or go to Gallery Place or L'Enfant Plaza stations.

The ONLY way to prevent this is to have officers on EVERY train. Lets be realistic.. thats not possible.
3 replies · active less than 1 minute ago
By the same logic as bag checks, you don't need them at every station. You just need to create the idea that a bag check might be there.

Right now, there's pretty much the idea that there won't be a Metro cop anywhere near.
PANOPTICAN!
That's not really a solid comparison. You can't go back and get contraband when you realize your bag hasn't been checked, but you can always start a fight when you look around and realize there's no cop on the car.
Oh what's this? African American teenagers causing trouble on the Metro? I'm shocked...

Seriously. They don't know how to act in public, and then they wonder why their "culture" is looked down upon. The man isn't keeping them down, they are.
We can thank the wonderful culture of entitlement for that. I'm so sick of certain elements (not all-but a decent percentage) of black people doing whatever they want with no regard to anybody else. And there constant defense is everybody is a racist. Don't like being attacked for being white by these thugs-then you must be a racist. Don't think your tax payer dollars should go for them to get welfare to buy drugs and bling bling...then you must be a racist. Think they should actually have to pay for metro fare and not get to jump the gates...then you must be a racist.
"Here is some tips for your trip!"

What else do you expect from metro if they cannot make even announcements in correct english?
Obviously, most of you don't know the DC judicial system like these kids do. Lock em up you say? These kids don't care. They all know that they will just be transported to DC's juvenile processing center and then be picked up by their parents or go to court and get a slap on the wrist by a judge. They are back on the street that very same day sometimes doing the exact same thing...

In the rare instance a DC court convicts they will always do so in the lightest of sentence. So many multiple-timers are given probation, it really makes no sense.

1/2 of the DC cops are too lazy to do their jobs competently.

1/2 of the DC (homegrown) prosecutors bother to do their jobs.

<1/2 of the DC residents are capable of competent jurist duty.

=criminals, especially kids, walk free.

Look at the DC court conviction rates vs the rest of the US, it would be laughable if it wasn't so dangerous.
I bet that was the green line. Ghetto to ghetto.
sounded like the zoo

You can see it is the orange line in the video. Stop making assumptions.
Actually, It looks like the Stadium-Armory to Minnesota Avenue/ Deanwood area to me.
It was leaving Minnesota Avenue in the direction of Stadium-Armory
Since the people documenting the crime can't even be bothered to report it, I don't understand why transit police doesn't just increase their patrols. Increased police presence would put a stop to most of this silliness.
I am disturbed by the fact that everyone seems to be more concerned about their commute being disturbed and not for the welfare of these kids. Kids in DC like a lot of cities have violent behavior issues. Issues that require the interest of the community at large to help solve. Why don't we discuss how we can help these kids instead of figuring out the easiest way to have them arrested (which by the way is an action that makes them more likely to head down a path of continued self destruction) or making fun of their mistakes.

bc we are tired of defending and tired helping those who dont want help.... period!
I'm more concerned about my commute. Two kids getting a fight after school isn't that big of a deal. I certainly got in a few fights and I grew up in suburbs. I would just prefer they fight other than inside the city's mass transit system
No one's making these kids act like assholes.

who cares if cops lock them up,,, people will say be poor little child didn't no better, or they come from a bad neighborhood without a mom and dad...if it was up to me,,we should see the cops lock all of them up......................
I'm mostly bothered by the reaction of the crowd - everyone seemed really excited! On the other hand - my peers used to act the same way when there would be a fight after school by the ice cream man. Of course - that was in middle school and these were grown men. Says something I suppose. Why don't these people just go to a boxing match?
"See Something, Say Something." What BS! How many fights and assaults have to occur before Metro realizes if Metro Transit Police can't prevent these crimes, there is no way they could respond to a determined terrorist attack.

Metro is starting to make the 1980s NYC subway system look like Sesame Place.
Fake. They weren't really going at it. Wanted to make a video. Real fighter would have had a knife.
1 reply · active less than 1 minute ago
I don't care if it is fake or not. As a passenger on a train that behavior would be equally disturbing and disruptive.
Were they trying to do it?

These kids seem to be entertaining themselves. It was staged for the video. The fighters did not appear to want to seriously injure one another. It's not much different than pro wrestling, boxing or even hard hitting football tackles in terms of the entertainment factor. It's sanctioned violence in a sub-culture. The same display of violence is organized by the dominant culture for big bucks.

What is upsetting to most is that these activities happen in public places that are necessary to us all and it represents a perceived threat to the order we need in our lives. Obviously serious violence should be more of a concern to us all but this kind of thing is a part of our culture as a whole. We celebrate it in some venues and frown upon it in others and expect everyone to agree with the accepted format?

It seems more rational to consider the role and consequences of displayed violent behavior in our culture than to accept a culture that requires every square foot of public transit space to remain under surveillance by an armed officer.

Correct. And places like Unsuck DC Metro continue to give them the hits they are looking for. It's all about getting attention. We need to stop giving it to them.
...and now the video has been removed from YouTube for TOS violations. It's bad enough for YouTube to do something about it, but "just another day" on WMATA.
