What would Metro Whiteboards Say?

In a post the other day, a contributor wondered why Metro continues to be unable to provide timely information about service disruptions before riders pass through the fare gates.

One commenter suggested the London Tube model as a possible solution.

In London, most Tube stations have whiteboards, onto which the Tube equivalent of station managers can provide information about service outages, etc. If there are none, they sometimes try their hands at being witty.

One commenter offered suggestions about what a Metro whiteboard would say:
SLEEPING
Do Not Disturb

ON BREAK
Do Not Disturb
(posted all day)

DO NOT ASK STATION MANAGER QUESTIONS
call 202-637-7000

HEY LADIES
My number is 555-555-5555
What else might you see on a Metro whiteboard?

Other items:
Metro throws party for itself for taking a year to build a staircase (Patch/Examiner)
Weekend track work: Red, Orange, Green, Yellow, Blue (WMATA)

I know derailments and potenial crashes and worker saftey are key. I wonder if Metro is also looking at some sort of policy to notify passengers waiting that a train is already at or over total capacity.

I rode the Orange line home from a Friday night Nationals game and so many people kept trying to cram onto the Orange line train that a mob scene started to develop with passengers shouting from inside the train to tell others there was no room and angry passengers dive and elbow into the car to try and get in before the doors close. Doors dont close, people are packed so tight they can't get off at the right stop, total anger and pandemonium. There was nobody there with authority to stop it and people were nearly suffocated and fights were starting. This MUST be looked at. It keeps happening over and over again. Everybody crams on the train after games downtown, plus Friday night drunks and others and everybody wants to go all the way West to Vienna, nobody gets off at the many stops in between Metro center and Vienna, they just get on.
Also in London, I was there after a Piccadilly line shutdown. The next day, they had a huge letter posted with an apology from the line manager. I'm happy to send you a pic Unsuck.

Would love to see. If you have it online, you can embed the pic here using IMG tag

And sorry for the blur, they were not big on photo taking. But i thought it was a classy move. At least they take accountability and explain what went wrong, something WMATA never does
Clearly the British believe in slavery! Agreed that's classy. Things break. Apologize. (or apologise). Don't point fingers.
Thanks. I took the liberty of embedding. :)

Also, Patch article says $1.7 million for a staircase. Is it gold?
3 replies · active 668 weeks ago
For the people that built it it is.
I'm guessing that the $1.7M includes the renovations they had to do to the elevator since the base of the stairwell blocks where the elevator used to open on the platform. Also, due to the geometry of the mezzanine and the platform, the stairwell has to go around the elevator shaft. The elevator was built right next to the escalator, so putting in a normal staircase on the other side of the elevator would have put it too close to the edge of the platform.

I'll try to remember to take a picture from the base this afternoon, assuming that the storms aren't hitting by then.
Duh, I forgot to look at the pictures in the article. Look at the first one--you see the entire length of the stairs, but then the platform has to do a right turn and a subsequent left to join the mezzanine.
Easy one .....

Here is my submission for what a Metro Station Manager would write on his or her White Board:

[Please note, the above submission was written by the Station Supervisor using the white marker provided by WMATA management].
Writing on a whiteboard would mean that you would need literate Metro workers. Good luck with that.

You want Metro to use a white board instead of a black board? Apparently you believe in slavery.

If white boards want to put at station entrances, they have ample opportunity to be set up — outside stations in Southeast.

See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.
Profanity written by riders.

Marks on the board from people keying and otherwise defacing the board.

Smudges since the cleaning crews will use Lysol or Clorox to clean the board instead of a dry erase board cleaner.

And that's assuming that someone doesn't steal the board.

"Ask someone who cares"
Actually, I bet Metro would probably write something nice in that scenario. They are a bunch of marketing people after all. Just look at the nice cherry blossom stickers that they plastered around the stations in April.

Unfortunately, if there were whiteboards in stations, it would be a matter of seconds before some "youth" tagged it with some stupid-looking symbol or someone erased it and wrote "kill the [insert anyrace/ethnicity/religious group here]"
If you're being raped, call Metro police at 202 262 something something
Not trying to make a political statement; just taking advantage of election year slogans and trying to apply them to Metro. How about:

(don't) HOPE (for any) CHANGE

Along those lines: "Abandon all hope (of being on time) ye who enter here."
97% of the signs would be a pro obama message if made by station managers.
1 reply · active 668 weeks ago
Steve - I doubt 97% of station managers would write pro Obama messages - that would require enough intelligence and literacy to know who our President is and be able to express so in writing, simply impossible for a Metro station manager!
"Please, just let me sleep."

"Do not disturb, I am not sleeping" I work over-time 5 days a week so I can pay for my expensive cars"
Just leave your money in the bucket, turn around and get a cab.
A permanent "Sorry for the inconvenience" would cover every situation at every station.
In other news, I am currently watching Sue Palka and Maureen Umeh of Fox 5 news work over Dan Stessel via phone. They are telling Dan that they are getting tweets that passengers are currently stranded on a train (tree fell on it) and have no information. He's trying to tell them that information is being put out, that 'we are utilzing every available channel', but they aren't having any of it. Then, they made him watch video of water pouring into the train door. *loving* this.
This is the only way to get the attention of a congressional takeover.
Expose the incompetent.

D Stussle is there to smooth over, managers are in place to cover over and employees get more over-time to be a push over.

No way can we let this go. Write or email your congressmen and women.

We dont need White Boards. We have red ticker signs that should be telling us all we need to know. They should be posted outside the srtation so I know whats going on BEFORE I enter. Those White Boards would only be victim to theft, and grafitti from some lil hood rat. Really, lets not entice Metro to do something that costs money. Its bad enough the ticker cant be accurate...
