Metro to Face Congressional Questioning on Security

Metro security will be the focus of a congressional hearing next week, entitled "Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: Is there a Security Gap?"

On June 24, Metro officials will be asked to testify, under oath, before the Subcommittee on Health Care, District of Columbia, Census and the National Archives, which is under the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

What instigated the hearing and what the focus will be are still unclear, but we'll update with details as/if they become available.

The hearing will start at 9:30 a.m. and will be held in room 2247 of Rayburn Building. It is open to the public.

Two immediate thoughts:
1. What do you mean, "Is there"? :) Of course there is!
2. Next up, "WMATA: Is there a Reality Gap?" Now THAT, I would attend. Or at least, drive past and flick off.

WMATA: Doing more for the car industry than all the automobile manufacturers put together.
I'd like to think something like this would make a difference, but Metro is an immovable object, literally and figuratively.
i bet they don't show up.

I hope someone has the brains to ask, "How do we know Metro Transit Police Officers aren't just waddling around the system, avoiding known trouble-areas?"
I think it's pretty clear what triggered this hearing.
"Yes congressman, we have a security plan. We randomly open bags in conjuction with the much-loved TSA and we know of 0 problems with this approach."
Since we've got some time, how 'bout a post requesting (serious) questions that should be asked of Metro officials by the subcommttee members regarding Metro Security (or lack thereof), then submitting the best 5-10 to the members on the subcommittee?

I know it sounds crazy, but....IT JUST MIGHT WORK!

Good idea. Will wait until more about the substance of the hearing is known.

I will be SO interested in Metro's responses to the questions! Where's the popcorn? Only thing better would be for the committee to have the riding public write their questions for them. Will Mr. Strudel be there?
"Security Gap"? Public transportation is inherently lacking in security. If it was as secure as flying, it would cease to be an efective means of getting from Point A to Point B. I accept that risk every day. However, what I don't accept is the tolerance of culture that DC and Metro has toward gangs of "unruly youths." They are our future prison population and thus do not deserve to be treated with "kid" gloves.
Can't wait to see Dr. Gridlocks complete suck up coverage of this hearing.

He'll try to justify all of WMATA's BS answers and sugarcoat all their lies.

That guy is a wretched tool, and I'd be surprised if he wasn't on their payroll.
Kubicek won't be there Mr. Unsuck. Don't you know he has a railroad to run?

Kubicek , the mechanic? How was he promoted from a mechanic to being over Rail when he was in charge of Rail and not fired or asked to resign? Is it true you get promoted at Metro if you can "lie" for mgmt.?
What security. The managers have no clue. They were hired as "buddies" friends and family members.
Fire managers and put educated, skilled and experienced managers in place then Metro will thrive!
