It's "Hold on to the handrail," not "Hold onto the handwhale."

I voye for Sweet Bobby entry, Maybe "Hold onto the handwhale?"
The sidesaddler
Let me guess, roadwest thinks this is the only reason the escalators are in crap condition, and not due to horrible management by his hero, David Lacosse....

Tough crowd. Is the problem that he's sitting on the handrail (rude & inappropriate!) or that he's fat? Would it be ok if here were skinny lbs? Just cause he's being nasty doesn't mean you gotta react the same way.

I'll go with the first choice--rude and inappropriate--but it is compounded by the fact that he's a large individual. I mean seriously, if he was skinny, he'd be taking up less of the handrail, wouldn't he?
Actually, I think it's a she. I'm just looking at the purse.

I am not sure which is worse for the subject in the picture: being derided for being obese or having her gender misconstrued.
That's a man?!

Ha Ha Ha, I thought the person was female. The person may not care what we say, just that they are pictured on unsuck. I bet there feet hurt.
Love it !!

Yes, it's not cool to be sitting on an escalator handrail, potentially causing even more escalator maintenance problems. However it is also not cool for the commentariate to poking fun at this individuals weight.

If they were not being rude and socially crude, we'd not be poking fun at them at all.
Oh please. If it where a cute skinny little blonde girl, you wouldn't have a problem with it.

Yes it is. Obesity is a national epidemic costing you, me and Metro's escalators billions.

They should finally have to feel a little shame.
She's not fat, she's big-boned!
That's a she?

I thought that was Heavy-D.
What's with all the "no fat jokes allowed"? When someone scarfs down a bag of glazed donuts for breakfast and then sits next to me on the train and pins me to the window, I think I have the right to poke fun at their weight. Anyone else feel the same way?
6 replies · active less than 1 minute ago
No. I don't fell the same way.
One never has the right to make fun of someone else.
That's it. No discussion.
I almost always have the right to make fun of someone else. Unless my words could be construed by a reasonable person to be threatening, I can poke fun all I want. Thanks, first amendment!
True, you have the right, but you have a moral responsibility to see the best in people. What if the obese person has a medical problem which causes them to be obese? Would you make fun of a handicap person because they were different than you?
Kindness begets kindness. If you want people to be nice, you must spread love, not mocking hate.
Considering they did this in a public place, it is the business of the public.
What?
Or when they're so fat, they take up a seat and a half and nobody can sit next to them at all.

What station is that? The sign is blurry, but looks like this was at L'elephant Plaza.

I can tell the sign says "L'Enfant".

As for the individual riding the escalator handrail--that's the sort of thing you give up before you reach adolescence. But at least s/he isn't standing on the left!
The escalator isn't working VeggieTard.

It's a pilot program. WMATA is going to start charging by the pound.
Name for shameful rider: "Railbird"?
Would be funny if it started working and sent him flying.

What, if anything, is this person doing wrong and should be singled out? Is thos person eating, drinking, clipping nails, etc?

This seems highly mean-spirited.

"...When someone scarfs down a bag of glazed donuts for breakfast and then sits next to me on the train and pins me to the window, I think I have the right to poke fun at their weight...."

Well, maybe, but that's not what's going on here. And it's not a matter of 'No fat jokes allowed' but that in this case, the fat jokes are juvenile. The point is, she's sitting on the escalator handrail, which has nothing to do with her being fat. Ass on handrail is gross, yes - but skinny ass or fat ass are equally gross - the fact that this person is fat is irrelevant.
