Irene? Metro's Got This.

Yesterday, Metro announced the preparations it was taking for hurricane Irene, saying in a press release that "chainsaws are being deployed in Metro motor vehicles for use in the event of downed trees."

While they later clarified the chainsaw statement, the notion of chainsaw-wielding Metro workers is pretty funny.

Wonder how many chainsaws Metro owns.

"Metro drivers shoot the bird with class".

The reason Metro drivers shoot the bird at riders who take photos is because the drivers who are caught doing illegal/breaking the rules do not want evidence.

If camera's and investigators were planted in all Metro divisions Bus and Rail you would soon find out how managers let disciplinary actions linger over 20 days for their friends/family/buddies when others who are not in the group "right crowd" get disciplinary action.

I was told that if you do what management wants, "special assignment" not only do get the oevrtime but you could get a promotion. I know of several "cover-ups" in the office and many others where an operator was told to "lie". The operator was told to say the rider spit on them that is why they assulated the rider. When in fact the operator got angry and the rider did NOT spit on them at all.

I would like to see congress or the senate mandate persons in each wmata office to oversee the incidents in each division and how their investigation of incidents is handled.
The hurricane is merely a pretext. Chainsaws will work great for the upcoming zombie apocalypse.

Ha. Thought the blade read "Dollar" at first glance. I thought "chainsaws from the Dollar store?!?"

Oh, those [chainsaws]? They're (1) to defend WMATA workers overtime pay and salary increase, (2) to threaten anyone who mentions a hint of "believing in slavery", (3) to wave menacingly at anyone who inquires about the status of escalators (occasional elevators), hot cars, hot stations, and anything else that might be broken (4) to remind riders that drinking water on the train is NOT tolerated no matter how hot it is, (5) the person who carries the chainsaw ALWAYS wins (forget the bigger stick!).

[BTW, this is all said tongue-in-cheek/sarcastically].

Oops! Did I get that comment about believing in slavery right or wrong? Too early, can't figure it out.

It's not like the Chainsaws are going to work anyways. At that point, they'll just be saws.

Good point. I hear that the escalator maintenance team also doubles as Metro's chainsaw inspectors.....so that means only half of them will be working....

I wonder if Metro have a chainsaw union? Nice to know if a station floods they are prepared with their trusty chainsaws! ;-D
New Metro slogan:

"You open that water bottle and someone's going to lose a hand."

If that was an actual rule expanded to include people with Starbucks drinks, I'd ride Metro MORE.
Better have medics in each bus as operating a chainsaw requires a modicum of skill. Also, cutting a branch is one thing, moving it out of the way is another. Can a driver who spends 8 hours a day behind the wheel actually perform this task? From the drivers I've seen, I think not. Better stock the buses with tourniquets.

No need to fret! If they cut off a limb there will be no disciplinary actions and if there are then you got the "...you must believe in slavery crew ".

I have to admit, these photos made me smile. Who wouldn't want to be given a chainsaw in order to do their job?! I know I would feel like a badass, too. It's nice to see bright-eyed, attentive Metro workers!

Hello, I'm Jason Vorhees and I'll be your Metro driver today.

Hey! They might come in handy for those Metro vehicles we see booted so often.
I wonder if they remembered to deploy gas too.
Oh I guess the drivers received overtime training at

time and 1/2 at $50 an hour on how to operate a chainsaw. Ha! How much did metro spend on this and are they going to let the saws stay outside uncovered as they do with generators to rust. I have seen saw blades wayside and generators left to rust in the weather.

They will not lock the chainsaws and they will come up missing when the next time needed. Reactive: " we will have to order more chain saws since someone stole them. Oh well, what are you suppose to do. Did mgmt. lock the saws up? Nope! were they suppose to?"

I've read that the chainsaws will only be in supervisor vehicles. Not sure if that's better or worse.

The fact that they feel they have to clarify by explicitly stating chainsaws will not be deployed on subway cars is terrifying.
