UPDATED The Week That Was March 25-31 Worst Yet!


Metro just keeps topping itself. Check below for details from a particularly bad week, including a double derailment. The bottom line for Metro: March 11-17: 28 incidents; March 18-24: 36 incidents; March 25-31: UPDATED 50. That is more than half of what Chicago has in a month! Note that we omit incidents in which Metro reports what appears to be a minor delay, opting instead to include when passengers are required to leave the train, a station was not serviced or a train was not dispatched.

We have to hand it to Metro. New York's MTA and Chicago's CTA don't list out their incidents on a daily basis, but a little comparison is possible. In January, the CTA reported 86 rail delays of 10 minutes or more.

March 25

7:39 a.m. A Red Line train in the direction of Glenmont did not service Forest Glen in order to maintain schedule.
8:13 a.m. A Red Line train at Twinbrook in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
8:14 a.m. A Red Line train at Van Ness-UDC in the direction of Shady Grove overran the platform and was unable to service the station.
8:41 a.m. An Orange Line train at Clarendon in the direction of New Carrollton was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
12:24 p.m. A Red Line train at Fort Totten in the direction of Shady Grove was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
4:32 p.m. An Orange Line train at Federal Triangle in the direction of Vienna was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train. The train was put back into service from Foggy Bottom-GWU after repairs were made.
6:22 p.m. A n Orange Line train at Foggy Bottom-GWU in the direction of New Carrollton was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
6:46 p.m. An Orange Line train at Metro Center was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train. The train was put back into service from East Falls Church after repairs were made.

March 26
6:31 a.m. A Blue Line train at Rosslyn in the direction of Largo Town Center was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
7:14 a.m. A Red Line train at Brookland-CUA in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
8:43 a.m. A Yellow Line train at L’Enfant Plaza in the direction of Mount Vernon Square was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
9:10 a.m. An Orange Line train at Potomac Ave in the direction of Vienna was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
12 p.m. A Red Line train in the direction of Glenmont did not service Forest Glen in order to maintain schedule.
12:21 p.m. A Red Line train in the direction of Glenmont did not service Van Ness-UDC in order to maintain schedule.
4:52 p.m. A Red Line train at Metro Center was taken out of service because of a door obstruction, and customers were required to exit the train.
6:53 p.m. A Green Line train at Greenbelt was not dispatched because of a mechanical problem.

March 27
7:53 a.m. A Green Line train at Mount Vernon Square in the direction of Branch Ave was not dispatched because of a mechanical problem.
9 a.m. A Red Line train at Rhode Island Ave in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
10:05 a.m. A Red Line train at Friendship Heights in the direction of Glenmont overran the platform and was unable to service the station.
11:22 a.m. A Green Line train at Naylor Road in the direction of Branch Ave was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
11:36 a.m. A Red Line train at Woodley Park-Zoo in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
12:28 p.m. A Green Line train at Naylor Road in the direction of Branch Ave was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
12:59 p.m. A Green Line train at Naylor Road in the direction of Branch Ave was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
1:03 p.m. A Blue Line train at Morgan Boulevard in the direction of Franconia-Springfield was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
4:24 p.m. Two Red Line trains derailed near Bethesda Metrorail station. Customers experienced major delays throughout the evening rush hour. Red Line trains shared one track between Friendship Heights and Medical Center while emergency personnel responded. Metro also provided shuttle bus service between Friendship Heights, Bethesda and Medical Center.
5:30 p.m. A Blue Line train at Arlington Cemetery in the direction of Franconia-Springfield was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train. The train was put back into service at Huntington after repairs were made.
5:41 p.m. A Yellow Line train at Crystal City in the direction of Mount Vernon Square was rerouted to Largo Town Center.

March30
5:12 a.m. A Blue Line train at Capitol South in the direction of Largo Town Center was delayed because of emergency track work. Trains shared one track between Capitol South and Federal Center SW until repairs were finished at about 6:30 a.m.
6:34 a.m. An Orange Line train at Court House in the direction of New Carrollton was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
8:19 a.m. A Red Line train at Dupont Circle in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
8:49 a.m. An Orange Line train at Rosslyn in the direction of New Carrollton was taken out of service because of a report of smoke, and customers were required to exit the train.
11:54 a.m. An Orange Line train at Rosslyn in the direction of Vienna was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
1:05 p.m. A Red Line train at Medical Center in the direction of Shady Grove was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
1:35 p.m. A Red Line train at Union Station in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train. An additional train was put into service from Rhode Island Ave.
1:57 p.m. An Orange Line train at Landover in the direction of Vienna was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
4:38 p.m. A Red Line train at Union Station in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
4:53 p.m. An Orange Line train at Court House in the direction of Vienna was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
5:18 p.m. A Green Line train at Mount Vernon Square in the direction of Greenbelt was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
5:51 p.m. An Orange Line train at West Falls Church in the direction of Vienna was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.

March 31

7:39 a.m. A Red Line train at Shady Grove was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
7:57 a.m. A Red Line train at White Flint in the direction of Glenmont was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
8:13 a.m. An Orange Line train at Dunn Loring in the direction of New Carrollton was taken out of service because of a door problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
8:50 a.m. A Green Line train at Suitland in the direction of Greenbelt was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
10:27 a.m. A Blue Line train at Potomac Ave in the direction of Franconia-Springfield was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
10:45 a.m. A Red Line train at Rhode Island Ave in the direction of Shady Grove was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
10:53 a.m. A Blue Line train at Arlington Cemetery in the direction of Franconia-Springfield was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
11:35 a.m. An Orange Line train at Dunn Loring in the direction of New Carrollton was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train. An additional train was put into service from Dunn Loring.
2:13 p.m. A Blue Line train at Van Dorn Street in the direction of Largo Town Center was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train. An additional train was put into service from King Street.
3:05 p.m. An Orange Line train at East Falls Church in the direction of Vienna was taken out of service because of a mechanical problem, and customers were required to exit the train.
5:37 p.m. An Orange Line train at Minnesota Ave in the direction of New Carrollton overran the platform and was unable to service the station.
